A large name brand like Toshiba has a lot of reputation to keep when entering a new market such as the netbook sales. In this case, however, Asus was a ground breaker in netbooks, and they continue to take the lead in certain areas such as battery life. If you don't need 14 hours of battery time, but you do need a full size keyboard, that should be your main consideration, not whether it's an Asus or a Toshiba machine. Toshiba Custom Utilities - Created specifically for Toshiba PCs, utility software enables you to monitor and repair your system. Docking Capability - Makes working with a Toshiba Tablet PC as simple to operate as any desktop PC. Sold off its PC business, Samsung exited European PC market and Toshiba announced plans to focus on commercial PCs. It looks like more PC makers will follow them with radical decisions, market analysts say. According to Mr. Moorhead, Dell and Lenovo are in good position nowadays since they have strong presence on the market, especially corporate PC market, which guarantees them not only sales, but sufficient profitability. Bob 'Donnell of Technalysis Research believes that Acer and Asustek Computer will have to eventually merge their PC businesses, creating a stronger player on the market of personal computers. Many local PC makers with insignificant market share will also likely to exit the market of personal computers eventually. The number of PC makers has greatly shrunk since 2004 because of various reasons. On PCs and laptops from most manufacturers, including Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo, and more, Secure Boot can be disabled from the EFI setup/configuration feature, available immediately after turning on your PC. While some makes and models of laptops actually do not let you turn off Secure Boot, the following instructions should work for most users. On most EFI computers, you'll need to access EFI setup immediately after turning on your PC in order to see the option of switching off Secure Boot, usually as an option under the boot options section of the BIOS configuration. As far as netbooks go, Asus has also had a pretty flawless track record as they were one of the first companies to come up with this sub-genre laptop. With all that said and done, it is important to note that the Asus Eee PC 1005HA does have its weakness and faults. Although Asus is slowly becoming a mainstream player when it comes to laptops, it is a baby compared to more established companies such as Apple, Toshiba or Sony. Companies like Toshiba and Sony have decades of experience in manufacturing laptops and as a result may have higher R&D and QC standards. It is no doubt that the Asus Eee PC 1005HA is a fabulous laptop, when it works. The asus and the qosmio share the geforce 360 gts which is a pretty decent graphics card but the acer advances a bit with the radeon hd 5850. Both the qosmio and the acer have blue-ray but the asus doesn't but that really isn't big issue for me. When it comes to the media buttons both the acer and qosmio have them, but i've read alot of reviews saying that the qosmio buttons on the left can get in the way and it's pretty annoying since it minimizes the screen. Though for the asus they reviews say that it also runs hot but its major issue is for the extremely low sound it offers. I have a toshiba laptop (i don't know what model, just recently, the sound just stopped working. One of the most common myths is the failure rate of Apple laptops is much less than PC laptops. All laptop manufacturers will come with at least a one year warranty and even for some PC manufacturers (ASUS and Toshiba) come with 2 and 3 year warranties for some of their lines of laptops. The one other thing to consider is that Apple does not refresh their product line as frequently as other PC manufacturers. A 120Hz 3D-capable display in the form of a desktop LCD monitor, a 3D projector, a 3D TV, or a notebook PC with an integrated 3D-capable LCD. And a 3D PC is the easiest way for consumers to enjoy rich 3D experiences in the home. To help consumers make the right decision when evaluating a new PC purchase, many OEM and system builder Web sites will now feature a new category called 3D PC”, from which consumers can select the right platform for the right budget. For consumers wishing to upgrade their existing PC, worldwide e-tailers and retailers will now feature branded 3D PC components, so consumers will know they are suitable for building a PC capable of running 3D content. NVIDIA for example, has been working closely with game developers and today there are more than 425 PC games that work beautifully with NVIDIA 3D Vision technology, the industry's only complete, consumer 3D PC solution. Camera manufacturers such as Fujifilm and Sony are bringing 3D digital consumer cameras to market so you can take and view 3D photos on the new 3D PC. Kicking off at Computex this week, many major 3D PC partners are showcasing their new 3D desktops, notebooks, all-in-one PCs, displays, and the latest 3D content, including games, movies, and photos. As a result, the U.S. PC market concentration has increased to 83% of shipments coming from the top 5 vendors. Portable PC growth remains strong with double-digit growth from a year ago, while desktop shipments declined by more than -10%. Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) - PC shipments in EMEA posted a slight increase in the fourth quarter, fuelled mainly by strong consumer demand during the holiday season. This translated into stronger than expected shipments of portable PCs, while desktop PC sell-in remained softer, particularly in the commercial space. Slowing growth in tablets and smartphones as well as promotions of lower-priced Windows 8 + Bing systems helped relieve some pressure on the PC market. IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker gathers PC market data in over 80 countries by vendor, form factor, brand, processor brand and speed, sales channel and user segment. That being said i found that Toshibas were one of the most reliable laptop brands, and asus have a strong reputation as well. The Eee PC is super light and that's it's biggest drawcard - if you're not interested in that then a larger screen, keyboard and touchpad will be of more use to you. Get the Toshiba, the eee pc is just going to get annoying when trying to do work. Asus Eee: If you are just too lazy to shop around for a netbook and would like to quickly settle for one, an Asus Eee netbook would be your safest bet. The Asus Eee series was one of the first netbooks in the market that was almost entirely responsible for the start of the netbook frenzy. The new Asus Eee 1005PE 10.1-inch netbook for instance as 14 hours of battery life, a 250GB hard drive, Bluetooth 2.1 and the new Intel Atom N450 processor. Toshiba is also a very well trusted brand in the laptop industry as they have been making very durable and reliable laptops for decades. Toshiba, have already an impressive line of laptops, including the Toshiba Portégé R500-10U and are keen to keep its brand and build quality together hand in hand. That's why, Toshiba claim, people will buy the NB100 - because it's a toshiba mini laptop. The battery itself, a 4-cell 5200mAh Toshiba say will tap 3 and a half hours of battery life. The choice to go for a 9 inch netbook has reaped its rewards in the way of weight - it's a fantastically lean 0.99kg - that's the number Toshiba has come up with anyway. Toshiba has a unique way to market the Chromebook 13. As its name implies, it's the first” 13-inch Chromebook. But when you're the latest PC maker to jump aboard the Chrome OS train, you gotta do what you can to stand out. It's stylistically reminiscent of wedge-shaped laptops such as the Asus Zenbook or the Macbook Air, but that's only skin deep. One thing we'll note: The Acer C720 we used has 4GB of RAM vs. the 2GB in the Chromebook 13. That gave it an advantage when we had 20 tabs open in the browser. And, the Toshiba lets you keep things running for another 20 minutes over even the C720. As with most of their netbooks, ASUS bundles the Eee Dock with the 1015PEM, which offers a range of utilities under four groupings: Access, Sharing, Experience, and Tools. We like many of the entertainment apps, including the ASUS @Vibe music and games entertainment portal, Game Park game trials, and Cyberlink YouCam for recording and uploading videos. With ASUS WebStorage Eee PC users get a whopping 500GB of online storage space free for a year ($39.99 annually thereafter for unlimited use) to store or share files online. ASUS also includes the Boingo Hotspot finder, which automatically detects Wi-Fi hotspots maintained by the service. The $369 ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM offers better overall performance than single-core netbooks at a reasonable price. The Eee PC 1015PEM is one of the first netbooks to hit shelves with Intel's new dual-core Atom N550 processor inside. The score also represents a significant performance improvement (200 to 300 marks) over netbooks with single-core Atom processors like the Toshiba mini NB255 (1,393), ASUS Eee PC 1018P (1,291), and Samsung N150 Plus (1,300). The 1015PEM scored 1,079 on Geekbench, again above the average netbook (883) but not as powerful as the 12-inch ASUS Eee PC 1215N with Nvidia Ion 2 graphics (1,285). That showing is almost 10 MBps faster than the average, and it beats the Aspire One D255 (23.7), mini NB255 (23.2), and even the Eee PC 1215N (27.1). With these speeds, we were surprised that it took the system 1 minute and 16 seconds to boot into Windows 7 Starter Edition, though, 14 seconds longer than average. Though not as fast as the Eee PC 1215N (3:17), this machine completed the task a few seconds ahead of the dual-core Aspire One D255 (4:10) and well ahead of the single-core N150 Plus (5:44). This score is less than the dual-core Aspire One D255 (151) and even under the single-core N150 Plus (156) and the ASUS Eee PC 1018P (154). However, the mini NB255 (38.4/23.7), N150 Plus (24.4/19.9), and Eee PC 1215N (39.4/23.7) all beat this system handily. The Eee PC 1015PEM's six-cell battery lasted an impressive 8 hours and 7 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test. This runtime is well above the six-cell battery average (6:35) and almost a half an hour longer than the Eee PC 1018P (7:35). It also beats the Samsung N150 Plus (7:12) and the Toshiba mini NB255 (6:41), though the Aspire One D255 (8:14) lasted slightly longer. For only about $20 more than its single-core cousin, the $369 ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM offers more pep in the same attractive package. The 10.3 x 7.1 x 1.4-inch Eee PC 1015PEM has the slim, tapered look of the other models in the Seashell series, which we still find elegant even though it's familiar. It isn't quite as thin or light as the Eee PC 1018P , which shares some of its other design elements. Once again, ASUS manages to get the battery nearly flush with the system, creating a smooth line that tapers from the back to the front. It can be safely said that the Toshiba Mini is currently one of the most environmentally friendly model in the market. Many popular netbook models out there such as the Asus Eee PC and Acer Aspire one have almost none of these certifications. Unfortunately, Toshiba only score 5.5 (out of 10) in Greenpeace's policy rating. Some of them include the very powerful Asus Eee PC 1005HA, Acer Aspire One, the stylish Toshiba Mini and the HP Mini. I personally think that the blue Asus and Toshiba models makes the laptop look like a toy, probably due to the shade of blue that they have chosen. We wish that, like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Acer and Toshiba had some kind of keyboard dock for their tablets. ASUS UL30A-X5 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Laptop: This model is only 0.98 of an inch in thickness and weighs just 3.74 pounds, which is extremely light for a 13.3-inch laptop. If you are looking for a stylish, practical and affordable ultra-portable laptop, the ASUS UL30A-X5 would make a great choice. Toshiba Satellite T135-S1310 13.3-Inch Ultrathin Laptop:This is yet another very popular ultra-thin laptop model. One of the most distinctive feature that makes the Toshiba Satellite T135-S1310 stand out from the rest is its design. ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BU 10.1-Inch Netbook: The 1005PE-PU17 is one of the latest netbook models from Asus. Equipped with excellent cooling features, the Asus Eee PC 1005PE can be operated for many hours without experiencing issues with overheating too. Now consumers can do away with the need for special laptop desks and portable tables to keep the netbook cool; the Asus 1005PE runs no risks of getting too hot during operation. Like the Asus Eee PC 1005PE, this device has a nicely designed 10 inch wide display screen with backlit LED technologies. Inside the Asus 1005PE one will find an Intel® NM10 chipset, a Mobile Intel® GMA 3150, and the device is outfitted with the latest Microsoft® Operating System: Windows 7 Starter. Finally, a full year later, we have two upcoming Chromebooks that are similar in many respects to the Toshiba Chromebook 2, while offering notable improvements. Regarding the RAM, the the Toshiba press release says up to 4 GB” so it is unclear as of this writing whether the base is 2 GB with an additional cost. As you can see from the above, comparing the Dell to the Toshiba, there's about a $100 premium on the Dell compared to a similarly equipped Toshiba, though Dell is claiming longer battery life at all models: 12 hours compared to 8.5 for the Toshiba. For the same price as the highest level Dell Chromebook 13, users could purchase an Asus Zenbook UX305LA , with Windows 10 and a 256 GB SSD; for $100 more, you could purchase a Dell XPS 13. Apple's newest Macbook Air 13 base model has also been on sale for $799 a few times this year from Best Buy. The 3205U processor, which powered both the Acer C740 and Acer Chromebook 15 that I reviewed earlier this year, is an exceptional component for powering Chromebooks, and will do a great job powering the Dell 13; the Toshiba 2015 actually has a slightly upgraded processor, the 3215U. Toshiba shoppers receive some shockingly good features for the price - even the $800 Asus 305LA doesn't have a backlit keyboard - but build quality and longevity may be a concern. They point to articles like this one , which note that on a spec-by-spec basis, you can find a number of PC ultrabooks” that appear to best the Air. For instance, both Toshiba and Acer make machines that weigh less than the Air. Because PC makers' inability to build a perfect trackpad is symptomatic of the larger difficulties the Windows device business faces in the mobile age. To understand how much trouble PC notebooks have with touchpads, look at the Asus Zenbook, an ultrabook that's often hailed as the next-best-thing to the Air. First, Asus has done a lot of work to make the machine look and work just like the Air. After a few months Asus began switching all its Zenbooks over to Elan touchpads, and it now ships a software utility made by Elan that allows people to tweak their touchpad settings. If it really wants a perfect touchpad, Asus will have to write its own software to better integrate the trackpad into its machine. The Asus Eee PC 1000HE and the 1008HA are currently the only models in the market that uses the 1.66GHZ Intel Atom N280 processor. In term of designs, I must say that it is a little better looking the Asus devices and it also comes in a variety of colors (black, white, blue, red and pink). The ASUS Eee netbook is available in a smooth pearly shell casing, with an Intel Atom N450 processor to provide you with longer lasting battery life. Given that you are a college student by day and casual gamer by night (lol), you would greatly benefit from the AMD A10 APU over what the Toshiba has to offer. Asus did, however, use the extra space to cram in something incredibly useful: a second USB port, and it's USB 3.0 at that.
Its large 250 GB hard drive comes with 500GB ASUS WebStorage which enables you to share, store and access all your data whenever and wherever you need it. You can share and create extra user accounts in order to safely share media such as video, music and files with your family and friends. Asus has the better overall features, but the Toshiba has the much efficient Processor, since it consumes less wattage compared to the Asus. Asus didn't reveal which chip it was, but TechRadar seems confident that it's clocked at 1.44GHz (burtsable to 1.84GHz). The VivoStick also comes with Windows 10 pre-installed, and Asus will be offering a mobile app that lets you control it from your tablet or smartphone. Still, at $129 the VivoStick looks like a solid deal if you're in the market for a pocketable PC. Toshiba is a little more expensive than these two brands probably due to its extensive R&D. Durability: As someone who has used all three brands before, Toshiba is the clear winner in this category. There is something about Toshiba laptops that not only makes it last really long but also last long flawlessly. My oldest Toshiba machine is about 6 years old and I don't remember the last time I have ever had the need to send it back to the service center. Toshiba comes in second where it strives to offer the latest essential features in its laptop. If you don't want to spend twice as much money, you might want to check out $99-priced Kangaroo PC , which runs Windows 10 Home and offers better processing power. While some of your expectations for the $150 PC are a stretch I have to agree with you that they have gone too far with the locking down of the UEFI BIOS. I brought it up because the article was about plugging a small PC into your TV. Miracast basically lets you plug any PC into your TV if your PC supports it. Asus Eee is: If you are too lazy to look for a netbook, and wants to quickly resolve a hand, a Netbook Asus Eee is the safest bet. Asus Eee has is one of the first on the market almost exclusively for the emergence of the netbook madness. The new Asus Eee 1005PE 10.1 inches, for example, that 14 hours of battery life, a hard disk of 250 GB, Bluetooth 2.1 and the new Intel Atom processor N450. ASUS UL30A-X5 13.3-Inch Laptop: Another excellent ultra-thin laptop model would be the ASUS UL30A-X5 laptop. Toshiba arrive on the scene with its NB100 mini laptop - even Sony turned up with it's quintessential VAIO P Series 'Lifestyle PC'. It has excellent value for its price tag; it has a large touch pad and an extra long battery life, ideal for people using their netbooks on the go. Toshiba is new to the netbook department but has quickly made it to the top seller list. Forth on the top five list is the Asus Eee PC 1005 HA. It has a long eight hour battery life, a glossy black exterior and it scores very high on performance abilities. Prior to offering netbooks, Asus made more motherboards than any other company in the world. You can find Asus motherboards on Sony's PlayStation 2 , Apple MacBooks, Alienware personal computers, and on some HP computers. Toshiba is yet to reveal how much it will cost, but it will be available from the fourth quarter of this year. The funkiest PC announced by Acer during its IFA press conference has to be the Revo Build. Asus also focused heavily on gaming PCs and laptops during its press event, but the one that catches our eye the most is the ROG GX700 - a bonkers hardcore gaming notebook with its own on-board water cooling system. The company also revealed more about its Vivostick PC dongle, which is an entire computer on a device not much bigger than a USB memory stick. There's an Intel Cherry Trail processor inside, so not quite bang up to date, but at around £85 it'll be an easy way to add a working PC into a separate room or behind your living room telly. With Asus and Acer focusing so much of its press conferences on gaming, it comes as no surprise as a specialist in that area has also detailed a new line-up of machines. I wouldn't recommend a Toshiba either, but they are my second best sellers and not so hard to fix as a dell, but IMHO a bit finickery. So for a laptop to last 4 Operating Systems you can't knock it. The only other company to match that is Asus. I'd like an Asus if I bought NEW, but Lenovos are just more plentiful, easier to get used parts for, fairly easy to repair on the road, and have super deep forums. And being a technician, I see more asus repairs come through our tech benches than just about any other brand. Another older laptop that is eligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade, this ASUS machine packs a powerful processor and some solid specs. For those who prefer a 2-in-1 experience to a traditional laptop, this new offering from Toshiba is great for those seeking a Windows 10 machine. For 2015 both most popular and most featured laptop models has been Toshiba Satelitte, Acer Chromebook and series of ASUS laptops. Designed to tackle your everyday tasks, the ASUS F555 redefines your expectations of an all-rounder notebook. Enhance your computing lifestyle with the ASUS X551MAV-EB01-B(S) Notebook PC. This notebook offers you the power and the speed you need at your work. If something goes wrong, the functionality of your PC can be seriously affected and could be rendered inoperatble. The Surface Pro 2 measures 10.81 x 6.81 x53 inches and weighs 2 pounds, while the Asus Transformer Book T100 measures 10.4 x 6.7 x51 inches and weighs 1.2 pounds without the dock and 2.4 pounds with it. Even still, the Surface's build makes it feel a bit heavier (and sturdier), but both are convenient and compact enough for travel. The Microsoft model has a miniDisplayPort, while the Asus features a microHDMI port. The Pro 2 includes a pen to navigate the tablet, while the Asus model does not come equipped with a digital pen. On the other hand, people sometimes forget that Microsoft charges extra for its keyboards, while Asus bundles one with the T100. This boils down to preference, but users will have to think less about using the Asus while sitting on the couch or lying in bed. In terms of build and design, both feature a nice design with a full selection of ports, but the Asus device is easier to use as a traditional notebook. Therefore, users looking for a hybrid that can act like a clamshell laptop, the Asus Transformer Book T100 is the way to go. Most users won't notice a huge disparity, but those interested in a tablet for heavy media use will prefer the Surface Pro 2. For anyone that will use the device casually, not as their primary streaming device, the Asus will be more than enough. The Asus product will be more than enough for users on a budget who just need a portable device for web browsing and light computing, but anyone looking to use their tablet for intensive design or to play high-powered games will want to go with the Surface Pro 2. The Transformer Book T100 comes with a keyboard dock, and Asus is now offering an optional keyboard with an extra 500GB of SSD storage built into the dock. In TabletPCReview's testing, the Asus Transformer Book T100's keyboard came out easier to use and sturdier than the Touch Cover for the Surface Pro 2. The T100 acts more like a traditional notebook, as mentioned, while the Surface Pro 2 is often not completely comfortable to balance on a lap. Both tablets support full Windows 8.1, but the Asus device has a leg up because it comes equipped with a free copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013. That's a $140 value built into the already low price of the Asus Transformer Book T100. Those who need a device that will last them the entire day, without having to spend $200 to get an extra battery, will appreciate the Asus tablet's staying power. Overall, considering the performance and price of the Asus Transformer Book T100 , we have to give it first place. The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is undoubtedly a beautiful machine, but when looking at the best option for average users, the Asus is hands down the beter alternative. Asus built a sturdy, budget-friendly device, that doesn't force users to make any major sacrifices on performance or style just because it's priced lower than its competitors. If I had to choose between the Asus and the original Surface RT (completely excluding the newer, faster, better Surface 2), I'd take the Surface RT. not in a complete holistic manner. The software I would've loved to use on the Surface RT but can't (like Acrobat) don't run well enough on the Asus either and the screen on the Asus is smaller than the Surface. It's weird but the tiny difference between the Surface screen and the Asus screen is noticeable to the eyeball. Granted, the Asus is a little faster but in real-world usage, it's not a huge difference especially if your main goal is Office work. If you think the T100 is an average PC, then this is basically mocking the entire Windows PC ecosystem because you're saying the T100 is a benchmark. Ok, so I'm not saying that the Asus T100TA is better than the Surface Pro 2, but I feel compelled to inform readers that it is significantly better than dirtyvu makes it out to be. It has a 4 out of 5 star average rating on Amazon because it deserves it! Again, I am not claiming that the T100TA is the winner here, though it certainly won for me. I just wanted to clarify that this tablet is significantly better than dirtyvu makes it out to be. Not only does it run all of the software that I need, even for development(Unity3D, Monodevelop, Eclipse, GIMP, etc.), it can also run several PC games that I own on low settings. Anyone here who has been using asus or a qosmio to give me some feedback, does it heat a lot, is it comfortable and things like this and say if its worth going for any of those. All you got to do is to disable the UEFI mode and turn off the Secure Boot option in BIOS, which allows the EFI-based PC to operate in a legacy BIOS mode. For example, in ASUS desktop or laptop computers, you need to enable the Launch CSM” option and disable the Secure Boot Control” or Fast Boot” option. If you want to run windows XP on an ASUS eee then buy it preinstalled and flog anything you don't want on ebay. To make things worse JKK, you mislead your readers when you compare the performance of Flash SSD to HDD using an old, obsolete iPod HDD Toshiba MK3008GL for comparison. I'm guessing you already know that if you had compared those SSD's to a REAL HDD, a recent model like the Toshiba MK1214GAH, you'd have seen that it is about FOUR TIMES FASTER than SSD and when you put one in a netbook it flat out blows the Flash SSD away in almost every performance test, INCLUDING boot time and hibernate/resume. The ASUS X550ZA-WH11 is designed for your daily multitasking, and it is even ideal as an entertainment option for smart and practical users. Clad in a spun-circle finish and patterned palm rests, the latest in the ASUS X550ZA line adds a touch of elegance to everyday computing. The ASUS X550ZA-WH11 is powered by AMD's quad core A10-7400P 2.5GHz (Turbo up to 3.4GHz) processor, backed by 8GB RAM and 1TB (5400rpm) hard drive storage. However, if you're planning on running some RAM-intensive tasks such as photo and video editing, music creation, and some decent gaming, you'll have to look elsewhere, in that case, the Intel Core i5-powered ASUS Zenbook UX305LA is a recommendable option, and for gaming the Core i7-powered ASUS K501UX will suffice as the ideal system for some of the latest game titles. This is a big plus to the ASUS X550ZA-WH11 as the space is big enough to store all your documents, alongside music, movies and even some less-demanding games. In as much as the ASUS X550ZA-WH11 lacks touch screen feature, it comes with a 15.6-inch LED-backlit screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, but we expected at least a full HD display thrown somewhere here. If you have an HDD that's about to pass over into the PC afterlife, check out today's top deal for a Toshiba 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5-inch Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit for $80 with free shipping (normally $100 - use coupon code: ESCKNAP23).
