Better yet, behind the big, bright display lurks a fairly powerful PC with loads of features for the price. Where most all-in-one desktops zig toward design aesthetics, the Toshiba LX835-D3380 zags toward performance, providing muscle for more than just passive entertainment. Space-strapped gamers, take note: This touch-screen PC lacks the design of Apple's iMac or Lenovo's IdeaCentre A600, but it's the most powerful all-in-one desktop we've seen. But the PC is slightly crippled by a 32-bit version of Windows 7, and its design is more than a bit unpolished. For those looking for a small budget system (monitor included) with just the right amount of power for everyday PC tasks, Acer's Aspire AX3810-B3801A is a smart, good-looking choice. With its powerful Core 2 Quad processor and 8GB of DDR3 RAM, the Acer Aspire M5800-U5802A is a powerful, good-looking all-around PC with a very reasonable price. As a relatively powerful, complete PC package, the DX4820-02 is a decent choice. The p6130 is powerful enough for most general PC tasks and has fair internal-upgrade potential, but its performance lags behind other recent PCs that cost much less. The Dell Inspiron 537s is a handsome slimline PC for space-strapped users, but its overall performance doesn't measure up for demanding applications or 3D games. But the case design makes the system feel a bit cheap, and the integrated graphics aren't made for gaming. The quad-core Cerise Desktop is a solidly performing, smartly constructed, nearly silent PC that has more than enough muscle to tackle graphics, video, and photo-editing tasks. Gateway's LX6200-01 home theater PC has a nice selection of media features, but its performance prevents it from being an outstanding value. Falcon Northwest's Talon, a fine gaming PC based on Intel's new Core i7 processor, falters only because it's priced too far ahead of the similarly equipped competition. If you're looking for an affordable PC to handle your basic e-mail and Internet-browsing needs, the Shuttle KPC K4800 can get you there for under $300—but you'll have to supply your own input devices and monitor. Gateway's FX541XT gaming PC demonstrates a couple of noticeable leaps ahead of its predecessor, the FX540XT. With the GM5632E, Gateway has done an excellent job of refining an entertainment PC into its basic components without making the resulting computer tedious, boring, or expensive. If you're a dyed-in-the-wool PC user who wishes you had a system like the iMac to call your own, the Gateway One mostly fits the bill. Just don't expect to be floored by anything other than the appearance of this all-in-one entertainment PC. The Affinity 5002Za delivers modest performance in some areas, but if you're looking for an affordable Media Center PC with HDTV support, the $699 price might be just right. A decent midrange PC with enough power for gaming, video editing, and other applications, but its loud DVD drive and over-the-air TV tuner limit its usefulness as an entertainment PC for the living room. Nevertheless, the great features and outstanding performance of the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA netbook makes it worth every penny. The ASUS Eee PC 1005HA netbook sports the new seashell design (also found in the 1008HA), finally breaking free from the sturdy design of the previous generation of Asus netbooks. Even so, the Toshiba mini lags behind in terms of design (the battery protrudes behind the unit) and battery life. Hewlett-Packard offers a tablet pc that comes equipped with wireless options, integrated security and an outdoor viewable display. Gateway offers a full bundle tablet pc that comes with USB keyboard, dock for a desktop, and DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. With a weight of three pounds this tablet pc is perfect for students or business people on the move. The Eee PC 1000HA has a rugged build, with a sturdy exterior to withstand the rigors of everyday use. With a price reduction of $50 (compared to its predecessor, the Asus Eee 1000H), the new model has omitted the draft-N wireless and Bluetooth function, which is seldom used anyway. Compared to other netbooks, the Asus Eee PC 1000HA netbook is most customizable where it is extremely upgrade friendly. It can be viewed from very wide angles but at just 1024 x 600, the Asus Eee PC 1000HA could have a higher resolution. Asus is also introducing its first gaming ultraportable laptop, with a slim machine that goes anywhere. First up is the new Asus ROG G20 gaming desktop, a potent desktop PC that blends angular lines, detailed design, and a small form-factor chassis to pack a lot of gaming power into a tiny package. The small chassis keeps it exhaust vents hidden, using a thermal design that keeps things cool while remaining quiet. Asus has announced that the G20 desktop will be outfitted with Intel Core i7 processors and Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 graphics processor. The next offering from Asus is also pretty compact, the Asus ROG GR8 console gaming PC. By packing a full gaming PC into a box the size of a gaming console, Asus invites users to make this gaming machine a part of their home entertainment setup. Like the G20 small form-factor desktop, the GR8 console gaming PC has a black and red color scheme, with an angular design that uses simple planes and surfaces to achieve a distinctive look. The slim PC is equipped with Intel Core i7 processors, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti graphics processor, and promises compatibility with SteamOS and the Steam Controller when Valve's new OS arrives in 2015. The console-sized PC features 4K and UHD display output, Miracast support for streaming media to an HDTV, SupremeFX audio output, and Gigabit Ethernet. The Bottom Line As the first next-gen Intel Atom Netbook, Asus' Eee PC 1005PE offers amazing battery life, but otherwise feels like a last-gen system. As the company credited with practically inventing the Netbook category, it's no surprise Asus makes some of the most popular mini notebooks around. Combining low (but not the lowest) prices with great battery life and good overall design, the 1005 has become the Netbook reference design for the entire industry. The newest version, the $379 Eee PC 1005PE, is the first Netbook to reach our labs with Intel's new Atom N450 processor-the long-awaited sequel to the Atom N270 and N280 CPUs found in nearly every other Netbook. The Eee PC 1005PE definitely scores points for being the first laptop out of the gate with the new N450 CPU, and its battery life is nothing short of amazing-making this a very useful system for serious road warriors. The design of the Eee PC 1005PE is very similar to that of previous 1005 models we've looked at, with a slight taper towards the front lip and gently rounded edges on the lid. In our benchmark tests of the Asus Eee PC 1005PE, we found the overall performance to be slightly better in some tests than the previous N270 and N280 Atom CPUs, but not in a way that radically changes your understanding of what a Netbook does. In a more challenging matchup, the dual-core Atom 330, which is found in the new 12-inch Asus Eee PC 1201N, did much better in our standard multitasking test (as a dual-core CPU would be expected to), while the N450 in the 1005PE was faster in our iTunes encoding test.
