News Corp is a network of leading companies in the worlds of diversified media, news, education, and information services. The iOS 9.3 beta is one of the biggest updates ('') to iOS 9 yet, introducing a new Night Shift feature and improving several existing apps, including Notes, Apple News, Health, CarPlay, and more. I'd say just the opposite... for the most part Apple does a great job keeping the newer OS's snappy on older devices. With recent reports suggesting that Apple sales have ground to a halt , this may help give Apple's sales growth renewed vigour. White mentioned that Apple is the top mega-cap technology pick for 2016, given the expected launch of iPhone 7 in September 2016, the growing momentum in the wearable category with Apple Watch, a bigger push into Tier 3-5 cities in China and new iPhone opportunities in India. Red Hat's leading position in the enterprise Linux server OS market and the development of next generation applications around Linux are the biggest contributors to the company's financials, White noted, while adding that he expects the trend to continue in 2016. Today's focus is on a pair of beaten up but well-known companies that should come back, at least somewhat, in the early months of 2016. From a company that, in the late 1980s through about 1999, was widely regarded as a has-been one-shot tech wonder due for an imminent Viking funeral, today's Apple has turned into a tech behemoth whose valuation is now considerably more substantial than any stock in the DJI. The iPhone, current badmouthing of sales figures aside, is still generating massive profits, the iPad has slipped somewhat (as have all tablets) and, perhaps surprisingly, the Apple Watch seems to be gaining some traction. Apple remains a leader here, and the future is unknown, except that Apple is providing at least some of the products that will take us there. And, for all the buzz the Ford-Google linkup is generating in the runup to the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, there's the small matter of that rumored iCar” to think about. For better or worse, Apple is one of few companies remaining with a big enough R&D kitty to pull this off. But the analyst meme, similar to the 1990s the Mac is Dead” syndrome, trumpets the same old, same old tale that Steve Jobs is dead, Tim Cook is boring and dull, and, well, Apple is Dead.” Boring and stupid. Even if Apple earnings disappoint” somewhat, they're still likely to be significantly above those of mortal companies in 2016. We can be wrong, of course, but for roughly the last 15 years, the Apple is Dead” crowd has always been wrong. Now it's on its own, trading under its new symbol and remaining on many investment services' buy-lists for 2016. The automaker already offers Android Auto for free in select model-year 2015 Sonatas and 2016 Sonatas. The news outlet also pointed out that the possible reason for the delay is because Apple just launched iPad Pro and it would not be good for sales if the company follows it up with another similar device release in a short period of time. In case of newspapers there is a specific time limit for any news to be reported in any particular newspaper. In these sorts of situation the newspaper offers stale news to the readers who have already accessed the online news. The online news has some disadvantages but those are mainly for the newspaper publishers. The rates of subscriptions and advertisements are greatly reduced in case of online news. This implies that as the number of readers of online news increases the revenue generation of the newspaper publisher is falling drastically. Apple Music has been around for only about half a year at this point, but it's already off to a strong start. As for the News app, Apple's just fessed up to misreporting the number of users engaging with the software. Even an upbeat report from Apple announcing that its online App Store set a sales record last week failed to boost the stock. Apple generally keeps 30 percent of App Store revenue, passing the remainder to app developers. TSB and Tesco Bank have also both added support for Apple Pay, meaning the banks' customers can now use their iPhones or iPads to pay for goods in store or online. As an additional sweetener to get users to sign up, TSB is offering its customers five per cent cashback on Apple Pay purchases. This is available to anyone with a TSB MasterCard or Amex for the first £100 of purchases made through Apple Pay each month, until 31 December 2016, meaning users can get up to £70 back over the period. Tesco has also announced that its banking customers can now take advantage of Apple Pay , but only if they have a MasterCard with the company. The Barclays banking chief was prompted to confirm the details after Jobson sent a series of emails complaining about Barclays' lack of support for the popular Apple payments system. Early 2016 is the first date Barclays has given after announcing in the summer that it would let customers use the system at some point. This is a change of heart from the bank that previously failed to confirm support for the rival Apple payment system. Previously, Barclays said it was in talks with Apple but gave no indication that it planned to support Apple Pay. When Barclays goes live with Apple Pay in the new year, it will join Lloyds , Halifax and Bank of Scotland, which switched on support in late September, two months after the original launch. Apple Pay users can now take advantage of higher pay limits when using the mobile payments system. As of Tuesday 1 September, the upper limit for contactless payments increased to £30 , meaning you can now use your iPhone or Apple Watch to pay for more expensive items. HSBC and its internet banking subsidiary First Direct added their support for Apple Pay in late July, meaning customers of either bank can add their debit or credit card to the Passbook app for mobile payments. HSBC was due to be in the first batch of banks supporting Apple Pay when it went live on 14 July. V3 has tested adding an HSBC debit card to an iPhone 6 and Apple Watch and can confirm the cards are now verified for use via the Apple Pay system. Shortly after the launch of Apple Pay, Transport for London (TfL) warned Apple users that the new system could see them liable for penalty fares or maximum charges if they do not keep their battery topped up. Apple Pay users were also warned to always choose the same device, an iPhone or Apple Watch, to pay for travel to avoid incomplete journeys and to benefit from daily and weekly capping. TfL noted that using Apple Pay for tube or bus travel is generally the same as using pay-as-you-go with a contactless payment card but with a few differences. Apple Watch users need to double-click the side button and then touch the display of the Apple Watch on the yellow card reader within one minute. Apple Pay went live in the UK on 14 July, bringing Apple's take on contactless payments to high-street stores, banks and cafés around the country. Owners of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and the Apple Watch will be able to pay for items costing up to £20 in places with payment terminals that support near-field communication (NFC ) contactless payments. Certain retailers, such as Marks & Spencer, have also upgraded their payment terminal software to offer limitless spending through Apple Pay. Users of the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 will not be able to use Apple Pay in shops, but can use the service with the TouchID fingerprint scanner to make online and in-app payments. Owners of the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C models will not be able to use Apple Pay unless their smartphone is paired with the Apple Watch, and the service will only work with contactless payments, not in-app or online transactions. Several of the UK's major banks and building societies are already supporting Apple Pay, including RBS, Nationwide and Santander, with more to follow in the autumn, such as Lloyds and TSB. Transport for London will also accept Apple Pay payments, enabling commuters to pay with their iPhone or Apple Watch in place of their Oyster Card or contactless payment card. Once a card has been put on a compatible device and verified automatically by the bank, Apple Pay can be used for contactless payments with compatible terminals. According to Apple, Apple Pay can also be used to make more secure online and in-app payments using the service, as a user will need to verify their identity using the iTouch fingerprint scanner on compatible iPhones and iPads. Apple Pay is supported by the three main credit card providers, American Express, Visa and Master card. Mark Barnett, president of MasterCard UK & Ireland, predicts Apple Pay will help drive contactless payments in the UK. Apple is said to be working on finalizing the iPhone 7 design so we don't know exactly what it will look like, but we can speculate that Apple will continue on its path of introducing more powerful, efficient devices that grow thinner with each design iteration. It's likely Apple will continue releasing two versions of each iPhone, so we may see an iPhone 7 and an iPhone 7 Plus in 2016. Apple is rumored to be aiming to make the iPhone 7 as thin as the 6.1mm iPod touch, mainly through the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack. Eliminating the headphone jack will give Apple more internal space for other components, and Apple will also keep the device slim with the continued use of in-cell panels and TFT-LCD display technology. Apple is rumored to be working on Lightning-equipped EarPods to sell alongside the device. Apple may be able to decrease the thickness of the iPhone 7 by up to 1mm by eliminating the headphone jack and instead adopting an all-in-one Lightning connector. Several rumors have suggested Apple plans to nix the headphone jack and instead introduce a Lightning port that will support both charging and music playback with Lightning-equipped headphones. In addition to allowing Apple to shave some thickness off of the iPhone 7 and saving valuable internal space, requiring headphones to connect through the Lightning port will boost overall audio quality. Apple is also rumored to be introducing some new noise-canceling technology to remove background noise during music playback and phone calls. Apple is said to be working on Lightning-equipped EarPods that will ship alongside the iPhone 7. They will be similar to the existing EarPods that are included in the iPhone box, with a Lightning connector instead of a headphone jack. Along with Lightning-equipped EarPods that will be made available with the iPhone 7, Apple is rumored to be working on a new set of wireless Bluetooth earphones that would be sold alongside the iPhone 7 as a premium accessory and alternative to the EarPods. The iPhone 7 is expected to be thinner than the iPhone 6s, with Apple using the elimination of the headphone jack and advances in in-cell panel technology to make the iPhone 7 slimmer, perhaps as thin as the iPod touch. If Apple does make the iPhone 7 more water resistant, it is not clear if the company would do so quietly or introduce the water resistance as a main selling feature. Apple is rumored to be working on AMOLED displays for future iPhones, but the technology will not be ready for the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 will continue to use the same TFT-LCD display technology used in the iPhone 6s. According to one rumor, Apple is exploring wireless charging technology that could potentially be included in the iPhone 7. While Apple is said to be looking into wireless charging for the iPhone 7, there is no guarantee the feature will make it into the finished product. It is also not clear what method Apple would use to implement wireless charging. Apple has included different features in the two devices in the past, with the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus offering different camera technology. An unconfirmed rumor suggests the larger iPhone 7 Plus could include a high-end 256GB storage option that would not be available with the iPhone 7. 256GB is a capacity that is not offered in any of Apple's current iOS devices, so it is questionable as to whether Apple would introduce such a high-capacity iPhone. Apple is said to be working on OLED displays for future versions of the iPhone, at a secret lab it's opened in Taiwan. Apple is also developing more advanced versions of liquid crystal displays, working on a technology called Micro-LED. Apple is also pursuing an OLED partnership with LG Display and Samsung, and is said to be close to a deal. Under the terms of the deal, LG Display and Samsung would both provide Apple with OLED displays for future devices. Rumors also suggest Apple may also be planning to invest in AMOLED supplier AU Optronics as a source of displays for future iPhones, indicating Apple is pursuing multiple options for next-generation display technology. Both OLED and Micro-LED technologies eliminate the need for the backlighting that's used in traditional LCDs, which would potentially allow Apple to cut down on the size of its iOS devices. Apple is also rumored to be developing a next-generation version of 3D Touch, which would scale up for use in larger devices like the iPad Pro. In the future, Apple could introduce an iPhone without a home button, instead integrating Touch ID fingerprint recognition into the display of the device. Apple is working on developing touch and display driver integration (TTDI) chips, but it is not clear when that technology will be ready for use in an iPhone. In a statement given to Tech Insider , an Apple representative told the website that the MacBook in the background of a feature video on the company was nothing more than a 2012 version of the MacBook pro. But those rumours have been shot down as Apple claims that it was just an already existing MacBook Pro model with a customised background. It is believed that Apple will be unveiling updated designs for the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro in the upcoming WWDC in June 2016. And yet Apple remains as tightlipped as ever on what the next generation holds. Editors' note: This story was originally posted on December 14, 2015 and last updated on January 12, 2016. The 6S and 6S Plus were unveiled on September 9 and hit store shelves on September 25, and we have every reason to expect the next major update to come around the time that kids head back to school in 2016. Though no official invitations have been made yet, however, the company's next big event is rumored to be scheduled for March 2016. Given that the Apple Watch would be coming up on its first birthday in April 2016, it's likely that such an event would be focused on its successor. That would also allow the large top and bottom bezels to shrink, effectively allowing Apple to squeeze a larger screen into the same size body. In fact, the higher-end Apple Watch models have sapphire displays - as well as OLED technology that provides best-in-class black levels, contrast, and colors on a growing assortment of smartphones (including the Samsung Galaxy S6). Apple uses LED backlit LCD technology for the current iPhones' Retina displays, and there has been speculation that Apple will eventually switch to OLED displays, but not until 2018 So, this would likely debut on whatever model succeeds the iPhone 7. Rumor has it that Apple may potentially omit the 3.5mm headphone jack , a standard on every preceding iPhone, in favor of an all-in-one Lightning connector. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus both come equipped with NFC to enable the contactless Apple Pay system. And yet Apple has yet to support the tap-to-pair capability of other NFC-enabled smartphones, which allow a user to tap a headphone or speaker to pair via Bluetooth. Powering the device is a a proprietary 64-bit A9 chip processor that Apple says offers 70 percent computing performance (CPU) and 90 percent faster graphics performance (GPU). In order to compete with new top-tier notebooks, such as Microsoft's Surface Book, you can bet Apple will add a lot to both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro. Apple has the advantage in the fact that when they release laptops, they work as advertised. The MacBook Pro 13-inch Retina had some problems when it was released in late 2012, but Apple fixed those issues a lot sooner than Microsoft has fixed the Surface Book issues. If Apple stays true to form, it will reveal a brand new iPhone at some point this year - and it's likely to be a substantial upgrade. The iPhone 7 was rumoured to appear last year but instead it looks like 2016 will be when Apple makes the jump. It will have to work hard to keep pace with forthcoming Android handsets from the likes of Samsung and Sony , but there are plenty of rumours that give hints about what Apple is planning. We've gathered together all the latest news surrounding the phone into one place and will continue to update this as we learn more. Taking Apple's release date history into account, it's likely we'll see the iPhone 7 officially revealed in September 2016. Both the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6 were revealed in September and Apple has no reason to change its strategy. Designers around the world are speculating on what Apple has planned and one artist, Marek Weidlich, has created an intriguing concept. The pictures were obtained by the Taiwanese site Apple Club , which previously published the first schematics showing the protuding iPhone 6 camera lens, before being republished by 9to5Mac. According to Korean site ETNews , Apple is currently in discussion with arch-rival Samsung over supplying OLED screens for its next phone. Munster now expects that in the first quarter of the year Apple will sell around 55 million iPhones, down about 10% from the same period last year and lower than Munster's previous expectations for sales of 62.5 million phones. Munster thus becomes the latest Apple analyst to admit that while iPhone sales will remain robust, the red-hot year-over-year growth seen for the device over the last several years is finally over. At the heart of Munster's downgraded expectations seem to be recent reports that orders in Apple's supply chains have been cut and downbeat earnings guidance from some Apple suppliers in recent weeks. The most notable of these reports came from Nikkei, which said Apple is expected to cut iPhone production about 30% in the coming quarters. The net result of our estimate reduction means our Mar-16 revenue is now $55.8B from our prior $60.7B. Given our unit estimates and aforementioned revenue expectations, we believe Apple will guide Mar-16 revenue $54-56B. Although it is not known what Apple plans to do with the site names it just registered, the company is in the midst of developing a number of auto-related projects. More ambitiously, the company is reported to be working on its own Apple Car , an electric vehicle which could debut in 2019. The project, code-named Titan, is cloaked in secrecy, but CNET reports Apple recently hired a top Mercedes-Benz research and development executive to help push it forward. AFTER a year of big Apple releases, analysts are predicting a flat 2016 where the world's biggest tech company refines product lines rather than produces the next big thing. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty recently predicted that 2016 would be first time that iPhone sales would shrink, dropping by up to three per cent. Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jack Daw Research, was more positive about the iPhone's future predicting that Apple would continue to grow sales but was pessimistic about the iPad, with the tablet market for all companies struggling as people fail to see compelling reasons to upgrade from their first tablet. After years of rumours it launched its first wearable product, the Apple Watch , leapfrogging Samsung, Sony and others to become the dominant player. An analysis of the Apple figures suggests the Apple watch added US$1.7 billion to the coffers in just six months. Apple also this year released a revamped Apple TV , a 12-inch iPad Pro aimed at those wanting greater productivity from a tablet, and Apple Music , which after a few months has 8 million subscribers which will grow, music business analyst Mark Mulligan predicts, to 20 million by the end of next year. The Apple Watch, released in April, was the first truly new Apple product since the launch of the iPad in 2010. One prediction you can make about Apple is that someone, somewhere will claim that Apple is running out of ideas. Argus Insights CEO and Founder John Feland predicts Apple will direct its attentions to the homes we live in rather than just the products we use. This method failed for the Apple Watch (though over 10 million units this year is hardly a failure), in that nothing about the Apple Watch really delivered an experience above and beyond what Android Wear was already enabling consumers. For 17 years thought to be lost, this candid, in-depth interview with the late visionary filmed in 1995, Steve Jobs discusses at length his early days, career battles, and vision for the future, just two years before he would go on to retake control of Apple. Again, Apple 3D Touch has not yet made an appearance on the rumour mill, suggesting it may not be a feature of Apple's next tablet. The iPad Air 3 still looks set to be released in early 2016 with March looking increasingly like the most probable month of launch. It is now thought the new model of its ultra-light tablet will launch in either summer or autumn 2016. Supply chain companies are apparently already gearing up for the device, lending credence to the news that it could be unveiled in September. On the other, it's unlikely Apple will want to out-spec the iPad Pro , which is its new, premium, enterprise-focused tablet. We probably won't see the next iPhone until September, but that's not keeping the rumors from heating up. A source talked to Fast Company and said that Apple is going to get rid of the headphone jack on the next iPhone and use technology from Cirrus Logic to use the Lightning port for audio out. The rumors also say that Apple has finally decided to implement wireless charging in the next iPhones, something that has been available for years on high-end Android phones. According to a report from 9to5Mac, iOS 9.2.1 is possibly the last Apple mobile firmware to be released before the anticipated March event of the company. The Apple event is purported to unveil a 4-inch iPhone , which will likely be called the iPhone 6c or 7c, filling in as the successor of the iPhone 5c. Further grapevines suggest that the 4-inch Apple smartphone to be unveiled during Apple's March 2016 rumored event will run a new firmware, the iOS 9.3. According to Product Review's post, the iOS 9.3 is needed to fix issues that the iOS 9.2 was not able to resolve. Some of the persistent dilemmas cited by Apple phone users from the previous iOS versions include the seemingly unending issue on Wifi as well as Calendar and clipboard glitches. The schedule for the official public roll-out for iOS 9.2.1 has not been announced by Apple yet but it is reportedly in the horizon, as reported by Christian Today. For instance, Gotta Be Mobile shared that a new Apple Watch might also have a grand unveiling at the March event. Since the iPad Air did not get a new generation this 2015, it is most likely that Apple is planning to unveil the iPad Air 3 on its event this March. However, tech fans looking forward to get their hands on the 2016 flagship device of the tech giant might not see the iPhone 7 yet this first quarter of the year. If the iOS 9.3 will officially arrive earlier this year together with a 4-inch Apple phone, the iPhone 7 is most likely to come pre-installed with it or a slightly advanced version of the OS. But since all these details emerging about iOS 9.3 release and other forthcoming Apple products remain to be unofficial, tech enthusiasts and Apple fans are expected to take all these with a grain of salt. Inquisitr will keep you updated once Apple releases any official information about the iOS 9.3 and its new iOS devices. We reported earlier this month that the company has internally scheduled a press event for March and that sources say it's for Apple Watch and possibly other new Apple products. Possibilities for the new device include a FaceTime camera, more iPhone-independent features over Wi-Fi, sleep tracking, and health sensor technologies , but it's always possible Apple will have a feature or two or new designer accessories. The product line last got a refresh in September when Apple released new straps and Sport model colors. Apple still has a ton of customers who want 4-inch phones and it isn't going to continue to try to sell these users iPhone 5ses. That would make the March Apple Watch 2 event an ideal time to officially unveil the device publicly. The iPhone 6c (or 7c), as it's currently being referred to, is rumored to sport a smaller 4-inch display that Apple hasn't used since the iPhone 5s. It will, based on several reports in recent weeks , sport upgraded specs over the iPhone 5s, however, including a 1642mAh battery, an A9 processor, 16GB of storage, Touch ID, and 2GB of RAM. Apple upgraded most of its MacBooks recently, and also introduced its new 1 2-inch MacBook in 2015 , but next year it could introduce an update to its extremely popular MacBook Air. It's likely we'll see Macs in 2016 get USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 across the board as well as the new Intel chipsets. Heck, Dell already did it , and Thunderbolt 3 will make for a great opportunity to finally introduce an updated 5K Apple Thunderbolt Display. His report predicts an early 2016 released for an upgraded iPad Air based on supply chain sources. Apple upgraded its iPad mini model alongside the introduction of larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro in September, so the iPad Air is certainly next in line for the product category in terms of a refresh. Following the launch of iPad Pro and its companion Smart Keyboard, we think Apple still has a lot of room for improvement in the keyboard arena for one. On the software side, making the iPad OS more like a desktop OS with more windowing options and a file browser/access makes a lot of sense, too, if Apple wants to continue to eat up computer maker market share with its tablet lineup. Don't worry Apple fans, the company will sell you a Lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter for a reasonable price if you need that old set of wired headphones to work. In addition to losing the headphone jack and all that implies, I think Apple will again strive to improve the display perhaps (or perhaps not) with AMOLED. Apple's display technology of choice on the Apple Watch could save battery life and give those pixel off blacks that Samsung and other Android makers have been bragging about for awhile. While the iPhone 6s can withstand a lot of water , Apple doesn't officially cover or claim any amount of waterproofing. A technology that Apple should steal from Motorola is its unbreakable display I've cracked the screens of 5 iPhones in my life both in and out of cases. Apple is planning its first TV streaming service of sorts, as Mark first reported last year. For now, Apple's newly launched Apple TV 4 and App Store still requires logins to cable networks to unlock most content from TV networks, but a streaming service offered by Apple could see bundles of multiple television channels or paid video services in a monthly subscription. How exactly that will position Apple and Apple TV in terms of competing with other services from Amazon, Netflix and others remains to be seen. We reported Apple is planning on brining the service to older Apple TV 3 users as well, unlike the new Apple TV's App Store and redesigned user experience, although plans could change depending on timing. Even the people running Apple's new free, 24/7 live streaming radio station Beats 1 don't know if it will prove to be an integral part of the Apple Music listening experience. But Apple does indeed have plans to expand the service that it makes accessible for free outside of Apple Music subscriptions and touts as a major differentiator of its service compared to competitors. The possible addition of other live streaming channels could mean Apple has plans to have a network of live streaming audio shows, not unlike competitors such as Sirius Radio. There are lots of opportunities for other Beats channels beyond music— sports, talk, podcasts, news, etc—and Apple is already home for a lot of the most popular audio content creators via iTunes. As Apple continues to add more retailers, banks, and card issuers to the list of those officially supporting Apple Pay in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, Apple is also doing work to bring the platform to more users as it plans a launch in one of its biggest markets, China. The service is scheduled to launch there as soon as this year through a partnership with local bank China Union Pay, and it's likely Apple will look to bring Apple Pay to other markets this year as well. Other advancements on the horizon for Apple Pay: Apple is reportedly interested in developing a person-to-person payment service , which in theory would allow it to offer money transfers between friends and family not unlike PayPal, Google, Square and other services. Thunderbolt 3 means 5K video at high frame rates, so we think Apple FINALLY updates its Thunderbolt Display in 2016 with essentially the same look and display of the 27-inch iMac. That's assuming if iOS 10 will support the 5C. Apple stopped selling the 5C this year, so there's no guarantee it'll be eligible for an iOS 10 upgrade. And even if it does, the rumored 6C with A9, 2GB RAM, Apple Pay support, will be a huge and definite worthy upgrade from the 5C. If you love the 4″ form factor, I would do it. Thunderbolt 3 uses DisplayPort 1.2 still, for one cable 5k support TB 3 would need DisplayPort 1.3 I do believe, so unless Apple is ok with a 2 cable version of the 5k Retina display it's going to need to wait another year. I think it's necessary now for Apple to finally sort out iTunes on the Mac, separate out the iOS App Store, and put it into the App Store on the Mac together with all the other app stores eg watch, tv etc, and just keep iTunes on the Mac just for managing Music/Films/TV Programs, just like as it is on iOS at the moment. I also would like to see (although I'm dreaming) for apple release a chrome cast like device for quick connections to different sized monitors via AirPlay, and maybe, who knows, streaming media and games to another monitor from the Apple TV that's on the same network, like the PlayStation 4 does at the moment.
